About Shingrix: This vaccine is used by adults to prevent zoster (shingles). Show more ▾

Zoster is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you have been infected with chickenpox (usually in childhood), the virus can live in your body's nerve roots in an inactive form. For reasons that are not fully understood, the virus may become active again. This causes shingles with symptoms of rash, blisters, and pain. This vaccine works by boosting the body's natural defense (immunity) against the zoster virus so that symptoms of shingles do not develop. It should not be used for treating active shingles, nerve pain caused by shingles, or for the prevention of chickenpox. Vaccines may not fully protect everyone who receives them. This vaccine should not be used by children.

In 2024, this provider wrote 1,827 Medicare prescriptions for Shingrix, about 24 times the volume of the typical Maryland prescriber of this medication (76.4). Medicare paid an average of $202.36 per fill, versus $196.22 statewide.

About Arexvy: This vaccine is used to prevent infection by the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Show more ▾

Some brands may also be given during the third trimester of pregnancy to help prevent RSV in the newborn baby. RSV can cause serious illness, especially in older adults with certain health problems (such as heart disease, lung disease) and infants. It works by causing the body to produce its own protection (antibodies) against the virus. Vaccines may not fully protect everyone who receives them.

In 2024, this provider wrote 1,064 Medicare prescriptions for Arexvy, about 11 times the volume of the typical Maryland prescriber of this medication (93.6). Medicare paid an average of $287.68 per fill, versus $240.08 statewide.

About Boostrix Tdap: This vaccine is used to keep up protection (immunity) against diphtheria, tetanus (lockjaw) and pertussis (whooping cough) in children and adults who have been vaccinated for these diseases in the past. Show more ▾

It may also be given during the third trimester of pregnancy to help prevent pertussis in the newborn baby. Vaccination is the best way to protect against these life-threatening diseases. Vaccines work by causing the body to produce its own protection (antibodies). Booster doses are needed to keep up immunity because antibody levels may become too low over time to provide the needed protection.

In 2024, this provider wrote 460 Medicare prescriptions for Boostrix Tdap, about 6 times the volume of the typical Maryland prescriber of this medication (76.7). Medicare paid an average of $56.07 per fill, versus $61.00 statewide.

About Naloxone Hcl: Naloxone is used for the emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose. Show more ▾

Serious opioid overdose symptoms may include unusual sleepiness, unusual difficulty waking up, or breathing problems (ranging from slow/shallow breathing to no breathing). Other symptoms of overdose may include very small "pinpoint" pupils, slow heartbeat, or low blood pressure. If someone has serious overdose symptoms but you are not sure if the symptoms are due to opioid overdose, give naloxone right away anyway, since lasting slow/shallow breathing may cause permanent damage to the brain or death. Since symptoms of opioid overdose may return after treatment, be sure to get medical help right away after giving the first dose of naloxone. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as opioid antagonists. It works by blocking the effects of the opioid in the brain. A specific opiate antagonist that has no agonist activity. It is a competitive antagonist at mu, delta, and kappa opioid receptors.

In 2024, this provider wrote 32 Medicare prescriptions for Naloxone Hcl, about 88% of the volume of the typical Maryland prescriber of this medication (36.3). Medicare paid an average of $90.32 per fill, versus $69.34 statewide.

About this data. The prescription history for WILLIAM M RUSSELL MD is compiled from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Medicare Part D Prescriber Public Use File for calendar year 2024, the most recent federal release. Figures cover prescriptions filled for Medicare Part D beneficiaries only; prescriptions under private insurance, Medicaid, or self-pay plans are not included. Because prescribing decisions are generally consistent across coverage types, this record offers a useful view of the overall Geriatric Medicine prescribing approach at this Columbia, MD practice.

Reading the costs. Drug costs are gross amounts paid to pharmacies under Part D, including both plan and beneficiary payments. They are not the price a patient pays at the pharmacy counter. Medications with fewer than 11 claims are excluded from the federal source data, and state comparisons use the average among MD prescribers of the same medication and form, shown only when at least five prescribers contribute. Always confirm current medications and costs directly with the provider and your plan.

About the medication summaries. Drug use descriptions come from the CMS Medicare Part D Drug Spending Dashboard (2024), and substance definitions from Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) 2026, U.S. National Library of Medicine. They are summaries that do not contain all possible information about a medication and are not individual medical advice. Ask a health care professional about any medication and your specific health needs.
