Every weekly NPPES update keeps its own page.

What counts as a recently updated NPI record

A record appears in an update when the Last Update Date on its NPPES file falls inside that update's window. NPI Profile groups those records into two kinds:

New The NPI was enumerated during this window. The provider or organization is appearing in the registry for the first time.
Updated The NPI already existed and something on the record changed, such as a practice address, a taxonomy, a phone number, or an authorized official.

A third group does not appear in the list at all. NPPES retires an NPI when a provider dies, when an organization dissolves, or when a duplicate enumeration is merged into the correct record, and CMS drops the file from the weekly distribution rather than marking it. Those NPIs are counted above but cannot be listed, because the source data for them no longer exists. An NPI that stops appearing is not necessarily invalid: a deactivated number stays permanently assigned to its original owner and is never reissued, so claims history against it remains meaningful.

A stale practice address or taxonomy code is one of the more common reasons a claim rejects, so billing and payer teams work from the updated records and check them against what they already have on file. For credentialing teams and recruiters the new enumerations are the useful half, since an enumeration is the first public record that a provider or organization has entered a market.
