What Is NPI Profile?

NPI Profile is a free, publicly accessible reference site for National Provider Identifier (NPI) information about healthcare providers in the United States. Following the adoption of the NPI Final Rule in January 2004, every healthcare provider covered under HIPAA was assigned a unique 10-digit NPI by the NPI Enumerator as the standard identifier for all administrative and financial healthcare transactions.

NPI numbers are issued and maintained by the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES), operated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Provider data is made publicly available under the Data Dissemination Notice, which governs disclosable provider information under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

NPI Profile aggregates and publishes this public data alongside additional CMS datasets including Medicare PECOS enrollment records, CLIA laboratory crosswalks, and Medicare Part D prescription data. The result is a single, searchable reference that gives providers, medical billers, credentialing specialists, and researchers a comprehensive view of any enrolled healthcare provider in the country, all at no cost and without requiring an account.

How Our Data Works

NPI Profile is a third-party aggregator of public government data. We do not generate, modify, or independently verify individual provider records. Here is how the data flows from the source to what you see on this site:

Because our records come entirely from the official NPPES public release, we cannot manually edit, correct, or remove individual provider records. If your information on NPI Profile is incorrect, the fix is to update it directly in NPPES at nppes.cms.hhs.gov. The correction will appear on NPI Profile automatically after CMS publishes the next weekly update.

As of June 28, 2026, the NPI registry contains more than 9.29 million records. The table below documents every weekly update NPI Profile has applied to its database since launch, showing the NPPES data version range and publication date. The 20 most recent updates are shown by default.
