What the PECOS enrollment flag means here
A result of PECOS Enrolled means the provider currently appears in CMS's Order and Referring dataset, which lists doctors and other clinicians who have an approved Medicare enrollment record and are of a specialty eligible to order and refer Medicare-covered items and services. A result of Not in PECOS data means the provider does not currently appear in that dataset; they may not be enrolled, may be enrolled in a status that does not appear in the public file, or may have been added since our last weekly refresh.

How current is this data?
The enrollment flag is derived from CMS's published Order and Referring data and is refreshed on the same weekly cycle as the rest of NPI Profile. The data was last updated on July 10, 2026. It is not a real-time query against the live PECOS system, so a very recent enrollment change may not yet be reflected.
Why doesn't this match what I see in NPPES?
NPPES (the NPI registry) and PECOS (Medicare enrollment) are separate CMS systems that do not sync automatically. A provider can update an address in NPPES while their Medicare enrollment record still shows older details, or be listed in NPPES without an active Medicare enrollment at all. The two track different things.
Is this official verification?
No. NPI Profile is an independent reference that organizes public CMS data for convenience. For official verification, particularly for claim submission or credentialing, query the CMS Order and Referring dataset on data.cms.gov or log in to the PECOS system directly. The information here is provided without warranty.
A provider shows "Not in PECOS data" but bills Medicare. How?
The Order and Referring dataset lists providers eligible to order and refer. Some enrolled providers bill Medicare directly but are not of a specialty that orders or refers, so they may not appear in this particular file. Absence from the dataset is not by itself proof that a provider cannot bill Medicare.
Can I use this to verify a provider's PECOS certification?
This tool gives you a fast, free PECOS verification for a doctor, physician, or organization: enter the NPI and the result shows whether they currently appear in CMS's eligible-to-order-and-refer data. It is a convenient first check, but it is not an official certification. For credentialing, claims, or compliance, confirm enrollment directly in the PECOS system or the CMS dataset.
Can I look up a provider's PTAN here?
No. A PTAN (Provider Transaction Access Number), also called the Medicare provider number or Medicare ID, is a private Medicare identifier issued by a provider's Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) after enrollment is approved. PTANs are not included in any public CMS data release and do not appear on NPI Profile. To find your own PTAN, log in to PECOS at pecos.cms.hhs.gov and view your Medicare ID Report, or check the approval letter your MAC sent when your enrollment was confirmed.
