Specialty - Primary Taxonomy

The NPI enumerator requires providers to submit at least one taxonomy code. A taxonomy code is a unique 10-character code that describes the healthcare provider type, classification, and the area of specialization. There could be only one primary taxonomy code per NPI record. For individual NPIs the license data is associated to the taxonomy code.

Taxonomy Description
An anesthesiologist is trained to provide pain relief and maintenance, or restoration, of a stable condition during and immediately following an operation or an obstetric or diagnostic procedure. The anesthesiologist assesses the risk of the patient undergoing surgery and optimizes the patient's condition prior to, during and after surgery. In addition to these management responsibilities, the anesthesiologist provides medical management and consultation in pain management and critical care medicine. Anesthesiologists diagnose and treat acute, long-standing and cancer pain problems; diagnose and treat patients with critical illnesses or severe injuries; direct resuscitation in the care of patients with cardiac or respiratory emergencies, including the need for artificial ventilation; and supervise post-anesthesia recovery.

Quality Reporting

The provider participated in CMS Quality Payment Program. The Quality Payment Program aims to improve population health, reduce costs and improve the care received by Medicare beneficiaries. The following quality measures meet Medicare's statistical reporting standards. Not all providers report the same information, because not all providers give the same services to patients. The quality information is just a snapshot of some the care providers give to their patients. Reporting more or less information is not a reflection of quality.

Quality Measure Performance Number of Patients
Post-Anesthetic Transfer of Care Measure: Procedure Room to a Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) 100% 46
Percentage of patients, regardless of age, who are under the care of an anesthesia practitioner and are admitted to a PACU or other non-ICU location in which a post-anesthetic formal transfer of care protocol or checklist which includes the key transfer of care elements is utilized
Pre-operative OSA assessment 100% 46
Percentage of patients who undergo a surgical procedure in the operating room/procedure room that have a pre-operative assessment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
Provide 24/7 Access to MIPS Eligible Clinicians or Groups Who Have Real-Time Access to Patient's Medical RecordYesN/A
• Provide 24/7 access to MIPS eligible clinicians, groups, or care teams for advice about urgent and emergent care (e.g., MIPS eligible clinician and care team access to medical record, cross-coverage with access to medical record, or protocol-driven nurse line with access to medical record) that could include one or more of the following: • Expanded hours in evenings and weekends with access to the patient medical record (e.g., coordinate with small practices to provide alternate hour office visits and urgent care); • Use of alternatives to increase access to care team by MIPS eligible clinicians and groups, such as e-visits, phone visits, group visits, home visits and alternate locations (e.g., senior centers and assisted living centers); and/or Provision of same-day or next-day access to a consistent MIPS eligible clinician, group or care team when needed for urgent care or transition management.
Use of QCDR data for quality improvement such as comparative analysis reports across patient populationsYesN/A
Participation in a QCDR, clinical data registries, or other registries run by other government agencies such as FDA, or private entities such as a hospital or medical or surgical society. Activity must include use of QCDR data for quality improvement (e.g., comparative analysis across specific patient populations for adverse outcomes after an outpatient surgical procedure and corrective steps to address adverse outcome).
Use of QCDR to support clinical decision makingYesN/A
Participation in a QCDR, demonstrating performance of activities that promote implementation of shared clinical decision making capabilities.

NPI NPI Number Validation

How NPI Validation Works

The NPI validation process uses the ISO-standard Luhn algorithm, a mathematical "handshake", to ensure that a provider's 10-digit ID is authentic and free of common typing errors.

To verify the NPI 1619083722, we treat the final digit (2) as the Check Digit—the target answer we need to reach. The process begins by taking the first nine digits and adding a constant value of 24, which accounts for the "80840" prefix required for all U.S. health identifiers. We then double every other digit starting from the right and sum the individual digits of those results together. For this specific NPI, that total comes to 68. The final step is to find the difference between that total and the next multiple of ten (70 - 68 = 2).

Digit-by-digit view

Use the first nine digits for the calculation. Starting from the right, double every other digit. The last digit is the check digit and is not part of the calculation.

Step 1: Double every other digit from the right

Starting with the rightmost digit of the first nine digits, double every other value. If doubling creates a two-digit number, add those digits together.

1 → 2 1 → 2 0 → 0 3 → 6 2 → 4

Step 2: Add all digits plus the NPI constant

Add the transformed values, the unchanged digits, and the constant 24.

2 + 6 + 2 + 9 + 0 + 8 + 6 + 7 + 4 + 24 = 68

Step 3: Find the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10

The next multiple of ten after 68 is 70. The difference is the calculated check digit.

70 - 68 = 2
This NPI is valid
The calculated check digit is 2, which matches the last digit of 1619083722.
