The physiologically active form of vitamin D. It is formed primarily in the kidney by enzymatic hydroxylation of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (CALCIFEDIOL). A potassium sparing diuretic that acts by antagonism of aldosterone in the distal renal tubules.
