Apixaban is used to prevent serious blood clots from forming due to a certain irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) or after hip/knee replacement surgery. Rivaroxaban may be used in children to prevent blood clots from forming after a certain heart surgery (Fontan procedure).
