The physiologically active form of vitamin D. It is formed primarily in the kidney by enzymatic hydroxylation of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (CALCIFEDIOL). A carbazole and propanol derivative that acts as a non-cardioselective beta blocker and vasodilator.
