Frequently Asked Questions

National Provider Identifier Questions

What is an NPI number?

The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a standard public unique identifier assigned to HIPAA covered providers. The NPI is a 10-position all-numeric identification number assigned by the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) to uniquely identify a health care provider.

NPI numbers won't change even if the health care provider name, address, taxonomy or employer changes.

The adoption of The NPI Final Rule in January 2004 established the NPI number as the standard unique identifier for all HIPAA standard transactions, replacing all legacy identifiers like UPIN numbers.

Who needs an NPI number?

All health care providers like physicians, suppliers, hospitals, medical groups or medical organizations that engage in HIPAA covered transactions need a NPI number. You are A HIPAA-covered entity if you electronically transmit health care information in a HIPAA standard transaction.

What are NPI numbers used for?

A NPI number is required to process:

  • Medical insurance claims and encounter information
  • Medical claims status
  • Coordination of benefits
  • Insurance eligibility, enrollment, and disenrollment
  • Insurance payment and remittance advice
  • Patient referrals and authorizations

What are the benefits of an NPI?

NPI numbers simplify electronic information transmission of HIPAA standard transactions. NPI numbers also provide unique identifiers for health care providers when for health care plans and facilitate and efficient coordination of health care plan benefits.

What is the NPI registry?

The NPI Registry is a free directory of all active NPI records. The registry is maintained by the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) and is the official entity that assigns NPI numbers, maintains and updates all the health care information associated with each NPI number.

Can't find the NPI number you're looking for?

The NPI Profile registry is updated monthly. If a record is not found please simplify your search, use a partial search term or a similar name or browse the NPI taxonomy code or state directory.
