The NPI number is a unique 10-digit all-numeric identification number issued to doctors and organizations by issued by the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) on behalf of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
NPI numbers are used in HIPAA covered transactions like provider enrollment in health plans, medical claims, coordination of benefits, patient referrals and authorizations, etc. The use of this standard identifier facilitates electronic health information exchange at scale.
